Crispy Sweet Potato Fries

With just five simple steps, you can create crispy and delicious oven-baked sweet potato fries from the comfort of your own home. These are perfect for serving as a healthier alternative to traditional french fries.

Preheat Your Oven

Before doing anything else, turn on the oven to 425ºF, and let it fully preheat. The initial hit of high heat will help to form a crispy outside. Placing food that is supposed to be crispy into an oven that is not preheated can result in condensation, making it soggy.

Slice the Sweet Potato Into Fries

When slicing potatoes for fries, make sure that they are similar in size and width, so that they will cook evenly.

Slice sweet potatoes lengthwise into 1/3 inch strips, then place the strips on their sides and slice into 1/3 inch strips again. A thicker cut make not get crispy, or cook all the way on the inside.

Coat Your Sweet Potatoes In a Starch

Starch absorbs moisture, further enhancing the crispiness of the fries. Cornstarch, arrowroot starch, and tapioca are all great choices.

Place Your Fries On a Baking Sheet

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent the fries from sticking. Spread the fries out evenly so that they aren’t touching. If the fries touch, they will stream, rather than bake.

Flip Your Fries One Time

Just one time, halfway through. If you’re doing more than one sheet at a time, switch the baking sheets between the bottom and top rack halfway through.

  1. Preheat the oven to 425ºF (218ºC) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. Toss the sliced sweet potatoes in the arrowroot powder, ensuring they are evenly coated. Add the avocado oil and toss again.

  3. Add the sweet potato fries to the pan, making sure they are evenly spaced out and not touching. Use two baking sheets if necessary.

  4. Bake for 16 to 18 minutes, then remove and flip the fries using a spatula. Rotate the baking sheets if using more than one. Bake for 15 to 16 minutes more, keeping a close eye to avoid burning.

  5. Remove the baked fries from the oven. Toss with sea salt and any additional seasonings you'd like. Serve with your favorite dip and enjoy!
